Now, even though this country has some of the biggest IT hubs in the world. The definition of broadband is still pitiful. (512 KB/s really!) And to make it even worse — there is speed cap in every BSNL plan. But if you look on the bright side, we should be thankful to BSNL. It’s only because of them we are able to access the internet in most part of the country. Now, if you are like me (an internet power user) and always wonders where the hell is the monthly bandwidth going, then you will be glad to know there is an easy way to track your usage. Useful if you don’t have unlimited plans. All you need to do is register your phone number on bsnl self-care. Or alternatively, you can install software on your MAC and PC to track your usage. So let’s see how this is done.

Check your BSNL broadband usage

  1. Register at Bsnl self-care portal. Based on your region, there are four different websites where you can register.

East Zone (Kolkata, Orissa, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Jharkhand, North East ) customers click here for registration. West Zone (Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Rajasthan ) customers click here for registration. North Zone (Haryana, Punjab, UP(West), UP(East), Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir) customers here for registration South Zone (Andhra Pradesh, Chennai, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu) customers click here for registration.

The list is not perfect. For instance, I am from Rajasthan and according to the list, I should register in the west zone. Right? But after a bit of trial and error, I found north zone working for me. If you face a similar problem, check your invoice (usually your zone is printed on the back side) or contact customer service. 2. Once you are on the login page, click on new Registration (For Existing BSNL Customers).

A new window will open. Fill in your details like customer id (printed on the invoice), email, password, etc. If you face any technical error, don’t worry. Give it a try after some time. Once you are done click on next and you will receive the password in your registered email. In my case, it took 7-8 days to get login credentials. But that was 2 years ago, things should have changed now.

  1. Log in to your account with given username and password. Once there, you will the screen (see the screenshot below) with a couple of options– like tracking your broadband usage, upgrading the plan, making online payments, logging complaint, etc.

To check your monthly usage go to My service > view broadband usage > select the duration. And that’s it. How can I check my BSNL broadband speed? To track of what speed you are getting you can use speedtest.net. I used it all the time and the results are quite accurate. How do I pay my BSNL bill online? Apparently, there are two ways to pay BSNL online. First, by login into your BSNL portal > My service > make a payment and then follow the instruction. Or if you can quickly pay without creating an account from here. All you need is the phone number. Update (recommended) Now you can also pay your BSNL broadband bills with freecharge or paytm. And the advantage of that is, you can apply coupons to get extra discounts and also use your wallet money. I am using this method for a few months and always save some money.
