How to Stop Discord From Making Emojis

Turn off Auto Emoji on PC

The Discord desktop client offers a dedicated setting to turn off auto emojis. Here’s how to use the same:

  1. Launch the Discord desktop app on your computer.
  2. Click on the Settings icon at the bottom.
  3. Click on the Text & images option from the left sidebar. Turn off the toggle next to ‘Automatically convert emoticons in your messages to emoji’. Go back and send a smiley. It will not be converted into a graphical emoji. If you use the Discord web app, follow the exact same steps on the Discord website to turn off the auto emoji feature. The above method will turn off the auto emoji feature for all the smileys. What if you want Discord to convert most smileys to emojis with the exception of a few? For that, another method exists. Simply start the smiley with a backslash (). For instance, if you have to send :), send it like :). Similarly, do the same for other faces that you don’t want to convert to an emoji.

Turn off Auto Emoji on Mobile

If you navigate to the above setting on Discord Android and iPhone apps, you will not find any option to turn off auto emoji. Basically, Discord doesn’t offer a native feature in the mobile version. Then how does one stop discord from making emojis on mobile? There are three ways to achieve the same

1. Disable Auto Emoji From PC

In this method, you should be able to access Discord via the PC. That is, you need to have a computer handy and follow the method mentioned above to disable auto emoji. Once it is disabled via the desktop or the web app, the same would change for the Discord mobile apps. Basically, the auto emoji setting syncs to the mobile apps. 2. Use Backslash to Turn off Auto Emoji

Similar to PC, you can stop Discord from automatically converting smileys to emojis on mobile by using a backslash before the smiley. Enter backslash () followed by the smiley and send it. The smiley would appear without the backslash in the chat. Note: Make sure to use the backslash () and not the forward-slash (/).

3. Use Discord Website on Mobile

If you don’t have a computer handy and you want to turn off auto emoji for all smileys instead of a few, you can do it from the Discord website on your mobile. The problem, however, is that if you open discord.com from a browser on your mobile, you will not see the login option. The website tells you to download the app. Fortunately, the same can be bypassed by accessing the Use desktop website feature in browsers. Here are the detailed instructions:

  1. Open discord.com/app or discord.com/login in a browser on your mobile. Log in with your account details. Once logged in, follow step 4. If, however, the links don’t open, follow the next step.
  2. Open discord.com in a browser. You might see the ‘Open Discord in your browser’ button. Tap on it quickly. If you miss it, refresh the page and try to tap on it quickly. Log in with your Discord account details and follow step 4. If, however, you don’t see the option or it’s difficult to tap on it, don’t worry. On Chrome, tap on the three-dot icon at the top and check the box next to the Desktop site. The page will refresh. For Safari, tap on the Aa icon in the address bar and select Request Desktop Website.
  3. Tap on the Login button at the top of the Discord website and log in to your Discord account. Once logged in, scroll down on the page and tap on the Settings icon.
  4. Tap on Text & images from the left side and turn off the toggle for ‘Automatically convert emoticons in your message to emoji’. That’s it. After changing it from the Discord mobile site, the same setting will sync to the Discord mobile apps.

Tips to Use Emojis on Discord

1. Use Pre-added Smileys

If you are a fan of shrug or tableflip smiley, you don’t need to type it every time. Type forward slash and a list will open. Select the smiley that you want to send.

2. Find Emoji Quickly

To find an emoji quickly, type colon (:) and enter a term that describes your emoji. A list of similar emojis will show up. Choose the one that you want to use.

Use Bots in Discord

I hope you were able to disable the auto emoji feature in Discord on mobile and PC. Similar to Telegram Bots, you can use bots in Discord to enhance the functionality. For instance, you can have bots to delete messages based on parameters, stream songs, and post tweets from Twitter.
